Vibration-based monitoring

In the last 30 years, vibration-based methods for Structural Health Monitoring of civil structures have been receiving increasing attention from both academics and operators, due to the several advantages they provide for damage identification purposes. These are related to the capability of providing information about the global state of the structure without prior knowledge about the location of damage and without the need to access the damaged portion of the structure. Furthermore, these methods can exploit the response to ambient vibrations induced by environmental or operational loads thereby enabling the continuous acquisition of information about the structural state. The activity of the research group on this topic has been devoted to the development of effective indicators for damage localization validated on real damaged structures. The latter task is often hampered by the unavailability of data and this constitutes indeed a challenge for the implementation of these techniques at the operational level. The Interpolation Damage Detection Method has been developed by the research group for beam-like and plate-like structures and successfully applied to several types of structures such as multistorey buildings, suspension, cable-stayed, and supported bridges. The most recent papers report the validation of the method on real damaged structures.
